In light of the beginning of fashion preparations for the next award of the American Film Academy, we recall the outfits of the stars that made us talk about ourselves in past years.
Marilyn Monroe at Charles LeMaire, 1951.
The ’50s were a time of red carpet fashion formation. It was then that Dior’s new look with its inherent post-war romanticism, theatrical Givenchy and feminine Balenciaga style matured. In the same decade, the three main stars of western cinema – Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly – shone, in fact, and “walked” design creations of the masters, giving them wide publicity. However, often girls borrowed dresses not from sewn by fashion designers collections, but from their own costume, as it was the case with Monroe.
At the “Oscar” in 1951, the actress appeared in a lush black dress by Charles Le Meira, who dressed the troupe of the film “All About Eve. Marilyn played in it one of the leading roles, and the film then received as many as six statuettes. To award the prize to colleagues for the best sound, the diva chose a dress that originally belonged to a completely different celebrity: it is a few months before the event in the tape “House on Telegraph Hill” was seen Valentina Cortese heroine. However, Monroe is not a bit confused: having put on top of his find a fur coat, she gracefully walked to the theater Pantazh, where no one could take his eyes away from the unicoronal queen.
Audrey Hepburn at Givenchy, 1954.
Unlike Marilyn Monroe, who never received the cherished statue, Audrey Hepburn was elevated to the title of Oscar-winning actress for his game in the movie “Roman Holiday. For the triumphant award she wore a lace dress from Givenchy, which was the first “zakadrovoym” experience of her collaboration with the designer. The outfit was identical to the work of costumer Edith Head, in which Hepburn appeared in the final shots of the picture. However, the Givenchy dress was relatively shorter and more modest, which emphasized the subtle beauty of the French fashion designer’s muse.
To date, “Audrey’s floral dress” has a page in English Wikipedia as a model of an ideal secular release. It was recognized as the best Oscar outfit by Time magazine and one of the most expensive dresses in history: at the 2011 vintage auction it was sold for almost 132 thousand dollars, which is quite good even by Hollywood standards.
Grace Kelly at Edith Head, 1955.
Paramount Studio’s full-time designer Edith Head was more famous than any movie actress in the 1950s. During her long career, she has worked on more than a thousand foreign films and won eight (!) Oscars for Best Costume Designer. Head dressed Elizabeth Taylor, Sophie Lauren, Debbie Reynolds and Grace Kelly, not only on the screen, but also beyond, turning unremarkable starlets in the most stylish women of the era.
One of Edith’s most famous creations is a dress for Miss Kelly, who in 1955 received an award for the image of a “country girl” in the ribbon of George Seaton. Made of blue satin and complemented by light drapery and straps, it has become a classic of glamour in the American style, repeatedly repeated later. The cold color, which was neglected at pompous events, preferring fashion on monochrome, gave the appearance of Grace the necessary status. Armed with this, she soon played her last and main role – wife of Prince Rainier and the Grand Duchess of Monaco.
Barbra Streisand in Scassi, 1969.
Barbra Streisand won two Oscar awards at the 41st Academy Awards ceremony. One – for his debut role in the film “Funny Girl”, the second – for the most tasteless outfit. The creator of the mesh pantsuit with sequins, which the day after the “Oscar” rattled all the leading media, was a Canadian designer Arnold Skazi. He offered Streisand a choice between “cute and conservative” clothes and, conversely, “too eccentric and unlike anything”. A young actress, who then only dreamed of world fame, of course, chose the second, and, as it seemed to her, did not miss. “God, I didn’t even think about the soffits! When they caught fire, my costume became absolutely transparent! – told Barbra in one of her interviews. – I felt so uncomfortable…”
Over time, a fashionable mistake played into the hands of both characters: “funny girl” was called the owner of the most famous costume with the red carpet, and to Skazy sprinkled orders not only from Hollywood stars, but also from the first persons of the state. Barbara Bush, for example, appeared in his outfit at the inauguration of his wife – George W. Bush, and Hilary Clinton chose dresses designer almost every exit. Streisand herself assigned Arnold the status of her chief costume designer, and a few years later he wrote a memoir, “The women I dressed (and undressed).
Cher at Bob Mackie, 1986 and 1988.
Cher surpassed her colleague on stage twice, first epitomizing the audience in an “Indian” costume, and then – in the “exaggerated” dress of an eastern woman. Both images were prepared for her by Bob Mackey – American designer, known for his collaboration with Judy Garland, Diane Ross, Lisa Minnelli and Tina Turner. In Hollywood, he is called the “glitter sultan”, creating clothes for women who are not afraid to be seen. Cher’s “Oscar” toilets definitely prove this thesis, summarizing that fashion is first and foremost an art.
“In 1986, I was not nominated for the Mask, and everyone said it was because of my habit of not dressing as a serious actress, – said Cher. – Okay, I wanted to be noticed by the Academy, but at the same time, I did not want not belong to themselves. For perseverance and desire to follow only their desires, sweet-haired actress received her award a couple of years later. “Oscar” Cher then rejoiced like a girl, jumping and dancing in a transparent dress with shiny fringe: “When Jane Fonda saw me, she laughed like crazy. “It’s great that me and Bob’s ideas bring people such emotion!”
Madonna in Bob Mackie, 1991.
It was also a significant year for Bob Mackie in 1991, when Madonna ordered from him an outfit for the 63rd Academy ceremony. It was not her who was preparing to perform “Sooner or Later”, which, as the soundtrack to the movie “Dick Tracy”, won a gold statue.
On the eve of Madge promised that she would come to the evening with the most famous man of the era, as well as try on an unexpected but familiar image. So it happened: the pop queen went to the press at hand with Michael Jackson, and her dress, along with a fur cape, appealed to the fashion of the 50s and the immortal style of Marilyn Monroe.
Nicole Kidman at Christian Dior, 1997.
No less spectacular at the “Oscar” appeared wife Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise, who at that time had not even thought about divorce. The actor, nominated for best male role, was wearing a classic black tuxedo, while his redheaded lady was wearing a luxury dress from Christian Dior.
For 1997 it was absolutely unprecedented: firstly, its design resonated with the then fashion red carpets (all wore only black cases and nude outfits made of chiffon), and secondly, its author was a “newcomer” from the French house Dior. John Galliano, who joined the post of the creative director of the brand a few months ago, thanks to this release Kidman received huge popularity, and then the support of other world stars.
Gwyneth Paltrow at Ralph Lauren, 1999.
Two years after Nicole’s triumph, America found a new style icon. She was 25-year-old actress Gwyneth Paltrow, who received an Oscar for her role in “Shakespeare’s Lovers. For the award girl came in a delicate pink dress Ralph Lauren, which reminded the guests of the evening the era of Balenciaga and Jacques Fat.
Made of taffeta and decorated with a V-neck, it had a very simple design, but at the same time was incredibly elegant. Gwyneth was compared to Grace Kelly time and again, hinting at good taste and daring to go against trends. Before Paltrow’s release, no one dared to wear pink, linking that color to known stereotypes.
Bjork in Marjan Pejoski, 2001
If the image of Gwyneth can be confidently attributed to the best Oscar outfits, the “swan” Bjork costume traditionally appears in the “tops” with the most unpleasant epithets. “Terrible”, “tasteless”, “outrageous” – as soon as the fiction of the designer Marjan Peugeosca, who at the time of creation of the outfit was only 15 years old, was not called.
He was brought together with Bjork by his love of shame and his desire to pay tribute to Busby Berkeley – one of the few directors whose musicals the singer watched with adoration. In his film “Ladies” you can see the outfits with an abundance of white feathers, which was just decorated her costume. Plus, the debutant of the award considered a symbol of fertility very appropriate in the context of Hollywood, so, in addition to wrapped her neck swan, captured the ceremony a small clutch egg. “I knew this might be my first and last appearance at this kind of event, and I certainly wanted to remember,” said Bjork after her failed appearance. “Anyway, guys, it’s just a dress!
The black PR of the white swan, which continued until the next Oscar, provided the performer with a full sold-out of her album “Vespertine”, the cover of which didn’t go without a cult outfit. Marjan also received good bonuses in the form of a star pilgrimage to his newly opened studio. In line for what was “easier to see than to describe” were hundreds of freaks – just as crazy as the muse of Lars von Trier, who loves to laugh and be funny.
Julia Roberts in Valentino, 2001.
In the same year, “celebrated” actress Julia Roberts, who not only received a statuette for her role in the film “Erin Brokovich”, but also made a contribution to the fashion of the early 21st century. Her spectacular fashion show in a black velvet dress has influenced the Hollywood tradition of wearing only new outfits for the celebrations. The Vintage from Valentino, chosen by Julia among a dozen other brands, was born in 1992, which Garavani dedicated to the most beautiful film actresses.
The only innovation of the fashion invention was a striped trail of organza, which stretched from the waist of the “beauty”. Her image was completed by a laconic bundle, small diamond earrings and a bracelet, but the main decoration of Roberts that night was a gold figure, which she held with undisguised pride. “I wore many famous women,” Valentino shared after the Oscar broadcast, “but only Giulia made me truly happy. When she went out for an award in my dress, I almost cried with delight. This will definitely be one of the most important moments in my career.
Holly Berry at Elie Saab, 2002.
The red carpet of the Academy Awards can literally overnight elevate the designer to the top of the most popular personalities in the industry. Thus, the Lebanese couturier Elie Saab, who at the beginning of the zeros was just recruiting clients from the ocean, woke up famous after the “Oscar night”, where actress Holly Berry was recognized as the most stylishly dressed star.
The photographers tried to capture all the details of her curious outfit: a skirt with a royal trail, a transparent top and floral embroidery that covers the spicy places of the dark-skinned actress. Elie Saab’s dress has set a trend for half-naked beauty, which over time has acquired grotesque forms, and therefore has taken on special value as an example of a harmonious combination of sexuality and “dress” of a woman.
Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace, 2012.
The image of Holly Berry held the “best” position for 10 years until Angelina Jolie’s naked leg entered the Oscars. Her velvet high-cut Atelier Versace tulip dress eclipsed all last year’s celebrity shows and set the bar for the future. Even today, it is impossible to say with certainty that any of the images has stirred up the public more than the one presented by a mother of six children together with Donatella Versace. At least the Twitter users who addressed Jolie’s dress with more than a hundred thousand messages did not experience this “boom” anymore.
By the way, the hashtags weren’t the only thing that day. During the online broadcast of the celebration in the network there was an account @AngelinaRightLeg, dedicated to the personalized body part of the star, which she dramatically exhibited at every opportunity. “Look, I’m here!”, “I’m beautiful, aren’t I?” – appeared on an ironic Twitter page that made the actress’s triumph even more noisy.
Anne Hathaway in Prada, 2013.
A year later, Angelina’s “leg” was joined online by Anne Hathaway’s “nipples”, which showcased the light through her pink Prada dress. The spicy detail was considered inappropriate at such a high-profile event, naming the “bow” of the heroine of the “Outcast” the main mistake of the 85th “Oscar” ceremony. Critics’ outrage was a result of the banal lack of time faced by the actress on the way to preparing for the evening, because just three hours before the release she was going to wear a completely different outfit.
“I was looking at my Valentino dress and already imagined how I would climb up in it for an award,” Hathaway told People. – A little later I found out that Amanda Seyfried was going to wear something similar and had to find a new look for herself. Among all the toilets offered to the actress, she liked a satin model from the Prada collection, which had a stressed dart on the chest. According to the stylists Ann and her husband, she added the necessary spice to a modest ensemble, assuring the star in the right choice. Not suspecting that it will turn into the most discussed fashion mishap, the diva smiled and winked at the press, who awkwardly joked behind the camera lenses. At this time, “Hattaway nipples” were shining in the top of all social networks, declaring that they won in the category “Best Supporting Actress” without any support.
Jennifer Lawrence at Christian Dior, 2013.
Hathaway wasn’t the only one who was embarrassed in the film award year. Jennifer Lawrence, who came to the ceremony in a lavish Christian Dior Haute Couture dress, presented to her as an act of cooperation with the company, fell right on the way to the statue. The bulky hem combined with the high heels of Brian Atwood prevented the girl from gracefully leaving, securing her status as the most clumsy actress in Hollywood. She confirmed it in 2014 and 2015, stumbling even in less intricate clothes.
Thanks to a kind of business card, Jennifer, which is annually massed by most media, Dior dresses received excessive attention in advertising equivalent. Prices for outfits, in which the oscar-winning actress was falling, astronomically crawled up, reaching 4 million dollars. Thus, her tender pink bustier dress became the most expensive in the history of “Oscar”, which overnight put the girl in a row with all the above persons.
Lupita Nyongo in a Prada dress, 2014
In addition to the fact that this azure blue dress is fantastically beautiful and goes very well Lupite Nyongo, he really had a place in history: in 2014, Nyongo won an Oscar for Best Actress for his role as Patsy’s slave in Steve McQueen’s film “12 Years of Slavery” (12 Years of Slavery).
The loud victory is remarkable for the fact that for Nyongo this film was an actor’s debut: before the actress was not even starring in episodic roles. In addition, she was the first African, awarded by the American Film Academy: despite the fact that Lupita grew up in Mexico, her parents are from Kenya.
“When I look at this statue, I think: every child, no matter where you come from, all your dreams matter,” she said on stage. McQueen’s tape was voted Best Film of 2013 that night.
Lady Gaga in Azzedine Alaïa, 2015.
Lady Gaga’s dress, which she wore almost five years ago, almost overtook Jolie’s famous dress in the number of memes based on it. Or rather, it wasn’t: the singer’s outfit, created by Azzedin Alaia, had nothing to do with it at all – it was the red leather gloves, which users on the web compared to gloves for washing dishes or sanitary works – the illustrations are attached.
The dress received mixed reviews that night, as did the actress’ performance at the Dolby Theatre. The singer performed three songs from the movie “Sounds of Music”, which celebrated its 50th anniversary that year. Lady Gaga’s performance was criticized by professional music critics, including Steven Sondheim, who has written more than 20 Broadway musicals and won an Oscar for Best Song for Dick Tracey.
“It was ridiculous and ridiculous. She sang songs with no soul,” he said.
Meryl Streep in Elie Saab Dress, 2017.
In 2017, the world learned about the difficult relationship between Maryle Streep and Karl Lagerfeld. The fact is that on the eve of “Oscar” with the leadership of Chanel contacted agents Maryle Streep and asked to sew for the actress dress from the spring-summer couture collection, only slightly changing it. About what happened next, told Lagerfeld himself.
“I made a sketch, and we started sewing the dress. A few days later we got a call from her representatives and were told that they had found a brand ready to pay. After we gave her a dress worth 100 thousand euros, it turned out that we also have to pay! We make dresses for actresses and give them to them, but we don’t pay. She is a brilliant actress, but it’s cheap behaviour,” said the fashionable Kaiser.
Later, Streep said the designer lied to her.
“Renowned couturier Karl Lagerfeld slandered me, my stylist and the illustrious designer whose dress I chose to wear to the Oscars. Subsequently, this story was picked up by the world’s media to keep me from appearing at the Oscars and to humiliate me in the eyes of the press, colleagues and the audience. An apology from Karl Lagerfeld I still have not received, because he lied, and the journalists printed this lie,” – said the actress.
After the actress in the conflict intervened stylist Strip and said, “as everything was in reality.
“It wasn’t about any kind of monetary compensation. We did not consider any brand from the position of whether he would pay or not. My company doesn’t work like that, it’s also against Miss Streep’s professional ethics. All statements that say otherwise are completely fabricated,” she said.
Chanel’s management has put a finishing touch to this dispute by issuing a formal statement.
“Chanel was in talks with stylist Meryl Streep regarding the design of her dress for the Oscars with the full understanding that she was also considering other fashion houses’ proposals. When the stylist reported that Miss Streep had chosen a dress from another designer, she gave no reason. Chanel wants to express its irreplaceable and deep respect for Miss Streep,” the headquarters said.
Anyway, the Oscar-2017 carpet strip appeared in a dress with deep sapphire pants by Elie Saab. Whether the image is successful or not, it’s up to you.
Jennifer Lawrence in a Dior dress, 2018.
Glory to Dior brand at the ceremony “Oscar-2018”. did not make the outfit itself, but the pushy behavior of its owner, Jennifer Lawrence. For the award actress chose a shiny metallic dress in the style of the Golden Age of Hollywood, which was successfully combined with careless styling. The outfit deservedly got its place on the list of the most well-dressed stars, and it seemed to be worth completing, if not for the next pranks of the most direct Hollywood star.
Couriers began when the stars arrived at the theater “Dolby”, when the actress was having fun and cursing at the cameras during a photo shoot on the carpet. Later, already during the awards ceremony, Oscar host Jimmy Kimmel asked the actors to be careful not to go on stage immediately after the announcement of the winner (recalling a curious case a year earlier, when Emma Stone mistakenly received the winner’s envelope in the category “Best Film”). At that moment, the camera close-up showed the embarrassed Stone, and Lawrence funnyly pointed at her friend with a finger.
After the ceremony, when the stars were already parting on the after-party, Lawrence saw her friends from afar and wanted to say hello to them, but decided not to go around the rows of chairs and climb into a dress right through them. The company in her difficult business was made up of a glass of sparkling and now world-famous shimmering dress Dior, the hem of which the actress tried to lift time and again.
Needless to say, a few pictures that the journalist was able to take instantly hit the web and generated hundreds of new memes. Lawrence’s overly pushy behavior made users question her sobriety, and the pages of the publications were full of headlines like “Drunk Lawrence surprised everyone with her Oscar behavior. Although there was already so much fun and direct in the biography of Lawrence that an event with her participation is likely to surprise without any funny occasions. And who knows how many outfits the actress will be glorified for its relaxed ways out.
